Double and Triple Test
With double and triple tests, the baby’s development is evaluated in the early stages of pregnancy and some problems can be detected. Double and triple screening tests, which provide information about anomalies and chromosomal diseases that can be detected during pregnancy, can be performed by Gynecologists and Obstetricians. Double and triple screening tests, which are one of the most important stages in pregnancy follow-up, involve a process that requires expertise. The doctor’s expertise is required to interpret the double and triple test and to perform the necessary tests to obtain a definitive diagnosis. For this reason, you can choose your own doctor or other gynecologists or institutions for double and triple testing during pregnancy. Assoc. Prof. has been serving his own patients and pregnant women in the field of double and triple testing in Ankara for many years. Onur Topçu has successfully made a name for himself in the field of detection of anomalies and chromosomal diseases that can be seen during pregnancy.
Double Screening Test (First Trimester)
Double screening tests, which are one of the screening tests performed in the early stages of pregnancy, are performed between the 11th and 14th weeks. In the double screening test performed by taking blood from the expectant mother, free β-HCG and PAPP-A biochemical values are checked. In pregnancies with Down syndrome, free β-HCG and PAPP-A biochemical values will be above normal, while PAPP-A biochemical values will be below normal. If this test turns out to be risky, the expectant mother is given CHORIONOUS VILLUS SAMPLING until the 15th week of pregnancy or amniocentesis is performed at 16-20 weeks. With CVS, that is, chorionic villus biopsy, a small piece of the placenta belonging to the fetus is taken and genetic analyzes are performed. Amniocentesis test is also performed between 16-20 weeks.
How is the Double Screening Test Done?
The double screening test is performed based on ultrasound examination. The double screening test, which is performed according to the thickness of the fluid behind the baby’s neck, gives results within 2 weeks.
The double screening test is performed based on the nuchal thickness, which is directly proportional to the baby’s growth. If the nuchal translucency is more than 3 millimeters in the scan, a diagnosis of pathological nuchal translucency is made and the baby must be subjected to further tests for Down syndrome. The expectant mother’s blood sample, together with the values obtained during ultrasound, are evaluated on the same day.
How Should Dual Screening Test Results During Pregnancy Be Interpreted?
It is necessary to inform the family that a diagnosis cannot be made regarding the interpretation of double screening test results during pregnancy. It should be stated before the test that the double test can only provide information about whether there is a high risk for diseases. If the result is high risk, the family is directed to further tests to make the necessary diagnosis. Another information that should be reported to couples is that only the risk of Trisomy 18 and Down syndrome can be calculated with dual screening tests. For this reason, this test cannot detect organ anomalies or disabilities in the baby, such as the heart.
Triple Screening Test (Second Trimester)
Down syndrome, mental retardation, chromosomal disorders, brain and spinal cord problems can be detected with the triple screening test performed with blood taken from the expectant mother between 16 and 19 weeks. The triple screening test evaluation, which is made with 3 separate hormone measurements, must be made by experts in this field.
How Should Triple Test Results Be Interpreted?
While the triple test is interpreted; The expectant mother’s age, weight, chronic diseases, ethnicity and harmful habits must be taken into consideration. During the triple test, which should be performed on the same day with ultrasound measurements, information about the medications used by the mother should also be obtained.
If the risk exceeds a certain level, amniocentesis may be recommended to the expectant mother. Because a definitive diagnosis is now necessary.
